Aretha Franklin and Metallica sang about “The House That Jack Built.” Growing up, my mom read me the story in a Little Golden Book.
When Dwight and I drove through my neighborhood the first time, he said, “Well, I don’t like that the garage door is the main architectural feature on every house.” We bought in a Planned Unit Development, a PUD. In 2003, it was one of a very few neighborhoods with fenced-in yards.
“We need to cute up your house, Julie,” said Dwight.
Today, I did that. Since the design features the garage door, I bought a new one.
Piece by piece, project by project, item by item, I am making the house that Dwight would have built.
